A Botanical Soy Candle Worth Looking At Before It Is Lit

Most scented candles are invisible until they are lit. This one does not wait. Real dried leaves are set into the wax against the clear glass, so it sits on a windowsill or a bedside table and looks like something picked up from a market, long before anyone reaches for a match.

The dried leaves scented candle is the decorated version of the round glass candle in this range. It is a single-wick soy candle, hand-poured into a round clear glass jar about 7cm across and 8.5cm tall, with around 150g of wax for roughly 25 to 30 hours of burning. The leaves are dried and pressed into the wax, so no two candles are quite the same.

What the Leaves Add

Unlit, the candle is an ornament, which is why this style sells so well as a gift. Lit, the flame lights the wax from inside and the leaves show as dark shapes against the glow. The leaves are decoration, not fragrance. The scent comes from the oil in the wax, so the candle smells the same as it would without them.

Burning a Candle With Leaves

Keep the leaves away from the flame. They are set against the glass, clear of the wick, and should stay there. Keep the wick trimmed to about 5mm, and if a leaf ever drifts loose into the melt pool, blow the candle out and lift it clear with tweezers once the wax has set. Burn it to the edge of the glass on the first lighting so it does not tunnel, stop when 1cm of wax is left, and never leave it burning unattended.

Why Soy

Soy is a plant wax that burns cooler, cleaner and slower than paraffin, with little soot on the glass, which also makes it safe to pour around botanicals. It sets with a matte, creamy surface and can show a pale frosted bloom as it ages. That is how soy looks, not a fault, and against the leaves it reads as part of the natural finish.

Gift or Keep

This is the one to give: a housewarming, a thank-you, Mother's Day, the friend whose house is full of plants. The plain round glass candle in the same jar is the one to keep for everyday burning, and the two make a small set. When the wax is gone, warm the jar, lift out the last of it with the leaves, wash it, and you have a round glass jar to refill with soy wax and wicks.

What It Is Not

It is soy, not beeswax, so it does not smell of the hive. It is one candle in one scent, not a refill or a kit. It is a decorated candle, so it asks for a little more care while burning than a plain one. Keep it on a heat-safe surface and out of reach of children and pets.
