Work on Your Queen Without Watching Her Fly Away

Every beekeeper who has marked a queen knows the moment. She's out of the cage, you reach for the pen, and she lifts off. Sometimes she lands on your sleeve. Sometimes she's gone, along with the money you paid and the weeks the hive now spends queenless. Releasing attendants, marking, clipping a wing, or moving her to an introduction cage all leave her loose for a few seconds. That's all she needs.

The OZ ARMOUR Queen Bee Muff closes that gap. It's a mesh enclosure with an elastic cuff at each end. The queen cage goes inside, both hands go in through the cuffs, and the job happens in a sealed space. If she takes off she goes nowhere, and you pick her up and carry on. The mesh is the same Italian mesh used across the OZ ARMOUR veil range, so you can see clearly and the bees inside stay cool.

Releasing Attendants Without Losing the Queen

A mated queen arrives in a cage with a handful of attendant bees, and many beekeepers let them go before introducing her, since a cage holding only the queen is often accepted more smoothly. Doing that in the open means opening a cage with a loose queen inside it. In the muff, the attendants walk out onto the mesh and the queen stays exactly where you want her.

Marking and Clipping with Both Hands Free

Marking a queen with the year's colour, or clipping a wing to slow swarming, is a two-handed job. In the muff you can take your time, put the pen down, adjust your grip, and let the paint dry before she goes back in the cage. The elastic cuffs hold it on your forearms so it doesn't shift while you work, and the mesh gives a clear view of what your hands are doing.

Built for Repeated Use

Heavy-duty construction with breathable Italian mesh means it holds up to a season of requeening and splits. It folds flat, lives in the toolbox between jobs, and shakes out clean.

What It Is Not

It's not a queen catcher or a marking pen, both are needed separately from the queen rearing range. It's for caged queens and bench work, not for catching a queen off a frame at the hive, where a marker-catcher tube is the right tool. And although attendants are generally docile, you're working bare-handed inside the mesh, so handle them gently, a squeezed attendant can still sting.

What is a queen bee muff used for?

It's a mesh enclosure that lets you mark, clip, or handle a queen bee safely without risking her escaping, since both hands work inside through elastic cuffs.

Can I use this to release attendant bees from a queen cage?

Yes, attendants can walk out onto the mesh inside the muff while the queen stays contained, rather than opening the cage in the open air.

Does the muff come with a marking pen or queen catcher?

No, these are sold separately. The muff is designed for handling a caged queen, not for catching one off a frame.

Can this be used to catch a queen directly from a hive frame?

No, it's for bench work with an already-caged queen. A marker-catcher tube is the right tool for catching a queen at the hive.

Is it safe to handle bees bare-handed inside the muff?

Generally yes, since attendants are docile, but a squeezed bee can still sting, so handle them gently.

What material is the mesh made from?

The same breathable Italian mesh used across the OZ ARMOUR veil range, giving clear visibility and airflow.

How does the muff stay in place while I work?

Elastic cuffs fit over the forearms, holding the muff steady so it doesn't shift during marking or clipping.

Can this be used for wing clipping as well as marking?

Yes, it's suited to both marking a queen's thorax and clipping a wing to slow swarming.

Is this muff reusable?

Yes, it's built from heavy-duty materials for repeated use across a full season of requeening and splits.

How do I store the muff between uses?

It folds flat and can be kept in a toolbox until needed.
