Move Bees Without Cooking Them or Losing Them in the Car

Moving a hive is the part of beekeeping most people do badly once and never forget. Tape over the entrance, a strap around the boxes, and a quiet hope that nothing has a gap. Then bees turn up in the cabin, or worse, you open a sealed hive at the other end and find a colony that overheated in the back of the ute.

This mesh cover fixes both problems. It goes over the beehive or nuc and ties off with a long cord, so any bee that gets past the entrance or a gap in the woodwork stays inside the mesh rather than loose in the vehicle, and air moves through the whole time. It folds away to nothing between moves.

Airflow Is the Whole Point

A sealed colony makes a surprising amount of heat. Thousands of bees in a box with no ventilation start fanning, the temperature climbs, comb softens, and on a hot Australian day a colony can die within the hour. Mesh solves that. Bees stay contained, air keeps moving, and the colony stays calm. Stressed bees are the ones that find the gap you missed.

Fits a Full Hive or a Nuc

The cover is cut to suit standard 8 and 10 frame hive boxes as well as nuc boxes, and the long tie cord takes up the slack on smaller gear. Pull it down over the box, cinch the cord under the base, and knot it off. It comes off the same way in seconds at the other end.

What It Does Not Replace

The cover keeps bees in. It does not hold boxes together. You still need a hive strap around the stack so nothing shifts in transit, and it still pays to close the entrance and move in the cool of the evening when the foragers are home. The mesh is the backup that catches what the strap and entrance block miss.

What is this mesh cover used for?

It goes over a beehive or nuc box during transport, containing any bees that escape past the entrance or gaps while still allowing airflow.

Why does the cover need to be mesh rather than solid?

Mesh keeps air moving through the box during transport, preventing the heat build-up that can kill a sealed colony within an hour on a hot day.

What hive sizes does this cover fit?

It's cut to suit standard 8 and 10 frame hive boxes as well as nuc boxes, with a long tie cord to take up slack on smaller gear.

How do I attach the cover to the hive?

Pull it down over the box, cinch the tie cord under the base, and knot it off. It comes off the same way in seconds at the other end.

Does this replace a hive strap?

No, it doesn't hold boxes together. A hive strap is still needed around the stack to stop boxes shifting in transit.

Should I still close the hive entrance before moving it?

Yes, closing the entrance and moving in the cool of the evening when foragers are home is still recommended alongside using this cover.

Will bees overheat inside the mesh cover during transport?

No, the ventilated mesh design keeps air flowing through the box, preventing the temperature build-up that causes overheating in sealed hives.

Is this cover reusable?

Yes, it's a durable fine mesh cover designed to be used repeatedly for hive and nuc moves, and folds away compactly between uses.
